Caeley Ott and Stanley Yarmoussik won the South End Community Center and Stratford Library-Teen Services Department’s annual Black History Month Contest and Celebration for all Stratford students in grades 6-8.

Out of more than 300 submissions from the Stratford schools, Caeley placed first for the 7th grade, and Stanley placed first for the 8th grade.

For the contest, students had to choose from one of the following:

— Write an essay about any African American past or present (both famous and not so famous) and explain why you would like to grow up to be like that person.

— African Americans have been depicted in many wonderful fiction books written by African American authors. Read a Young Adult Fiction title such as those listed on the back and imagine that you are one of the African American characters in the story, how would you relate to the same difficult situation that the character faces and why.

— Poem: Write a poem about an African American person or a special event in African American history.

— Art: Create a drawing or an original piece of work about an African American person or a special event in African American History.
