The Stratford Arts Guild announces its first annual Juried Student Art Competition, on Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Artists and Artisans in Paradise Show and Fair.

Competition organizer and guild member Susan Ernst says the competition is an opportunity for upper level high school art students to share their work with the community, experience the process of art judging and gain valuable experience in the marketing of art.

The art competition is open to all current high school juniors and seniors residing in Stratford. Students may submit up to three works for consideration, with the opportunity to exhibit one piece. All works must be original. Work for the show will be selected by members of the Stratford Arts Guild.

Students may submit work in any of seven categories: Photography, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, fiber (including sewing, weaving, paper-making, and basketry), works on paper (including drawing, printmaking, collage, pastel, pen and ink, mixed media), and painting (including acrylic, watercolor, oils and gouache).

On the morning of the show, the work will be juried by a panel of independent judges. Members of the judging committee will award ribbons for first, second and third place in each of the seven categories. Additionally, one Best in Show ribbon will also be awarded. All students whose work is chosen to be shown will receive a certificate.

Students should apply online at paradiseartshow.com. The deadline is July 1. For more information, call Susan Ernst at 203-767-7743, visit stratfordartsguild.net or call 203-375-1258.
