Academy at Stratford (SA@S) students will perform Hamlet and Cymbeline in repertory from Aug. 2-10 on the grounds of the former American Shakespeare Festival Theater in Stratford. The productions mark the culmination of the new, interdisciplinary theater training program’s first season. Performances are free and open to the public.
Cymbeline will be performed inside the house and ticket reservations are required. Hamlet will be staged behind the house and no reservations are necessary.
The opening of the program this summer marks the first time in decades that young actors have had the opportunity train and perform on the historic theater property. In a new take on traditional Shakespeare training, the students are pursuing an interdisciplinary, collaborative, ensemble-based course of study.
The rigorous curriculum includes daily classes and rehearsals as well as masterclasses with visiting professionals and academics from institutions around the country, including the American Shakespeare Center, the Yale School of Drama, and Ensemble Studio Theater.
Throughout the summer, the students have also presented work-in-progress performances as part of the program’s Friday Night Showings series.
