Kathleen Lozinak, fourth grade teacher at Chapel Street School, was announced as Stratford’s Teacher of the Year 2014 by Interim Superintendent Margaret Lasek at a school ceremony on May 31.

Lasek told the students, teachers and parents gathered that Lozinak’s “colleagues praise her use of hands-on activities that enrich student understanding by requiring students to question, hypothesize and draw conclusions. They praise her excitement for learning that rubs off on her students.”

Lasek quoted from Lozinak’s stated philosophy of teaching: “I believe it is my personal responsibility to prepare my students to be productive members of our 21st century society.”

Lozinak is currently pursuing her doctorate in education, is a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Women Educators and has won numerous grants and awards from the district, including the BEST Friend of Education Award and the SEA’s Human Relations Award.

Lozinak serves on several committees for Chapel Street School, is a TEAM Mentor Leader and a TEAM reflection paper reviewer, and these activities helped to distinguish Lozinak from her peers, according to Lasek. “She is part of the greater community here,” Lasek told The Star. “She is entrenched in activities at Chapel School and in district initiatives as well.”

In receiving the recognition Lozinak said, “I love my job and everyone I work with. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Lozinak now will represent Stratford in the state Teacher of the Year program.
