Twenty-six area residents recently graduated from Housatonic Community College’s first community health worker course.
The non-credit course prepares students for a career helping individuals, families, groups and communities learn how to access healthcare, social services, food and housing resources.
Toward this end, community health workers perform a range of activities that include outreach, community education, counseling, social support and advocacy.
They also make home visits to chronically ill patients, pregnant women, nursing mothers, individuals with high-risk health issues, and the elderly.
