See the Yale Whiffenpoofs with SHS Chorus Alum Brandon Sherrod live in concert Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Stratford High School.

Also featured will be Stratford High School’s Select Choir and Boy’s and Girl’s a cappella group.

General seating and limited tickets means this event could sell out fast.

Here is the Ticketbud with ticketing information: whiffenpoofs.ticketbud.com/the-yale-whiffenpoofs-at-statford-high-school

The Whiffenpoof’s visit to Stratford High School has been organized by current group member Brandon Sherrod, who attended Stratford High School. Since matriculating at Yale University, Brandon has studied a political science major and played for the Varsity Basketball Team. He plans to pursue a career in local politics after college.

Each year, 14 Yale seniors are selected to be in the Whiffenpoofs, the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella singing group. Founded in 1909, the all-male ensemble claims a number of distinguished alumni including Cole Porter, Rudy Vallee, and U.S. Senator Prescott Bush. The Whiffenpoofs’ signature ballad (which is still sung at every concert) has been recorded by famous musicians like Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Elvis Presley.

The Whiffenpoofs perform more than 200 concerts each year in such venues such as Carnegie Hall, the White House, and the Lincoln Center. They have also been featured on television shows such as “Glee,” “The Sing Off,” “The West Wing,” and “Saturday Night Live.” This year, all 14 Whiffs have taken the year off from school to travel the world and will perform for audiences on all six inhabited continents.

The Whiffenpoofs’ repertoire of jazz standards, classic ballads, traditional Yale songs, and recent hits continue to delight audiences all over the world. They look forward to sharing their musical excellence and professional showmanship with nearby resident this February. For more appearance schedules or tickets to any of their performances, visit the Whiffenpoofs’ webpage at www.whiffenpoofs.com

Planners narrow focus for Stratford high renovation

The recently approved construction manager for the Stratford High School renovation project, Turner Construction, and architect Antinozzi Associates met on Jan. 23 at the school to start to get “a field sense” for how the various options being considered would affect scheduling and the students, according to SHS Renovation Subcommittee Chairman Alan Llewelyn.

Turner was approved as the construction manager (CM) by the Town Council on Jan. 12. During the CM selection process, Turner introduced a sixth option for the building and renovation project on top of the five that Antinozzi had asked the CM candidates to review.

The six options are all variations and extensions of renovating current buildings and adding new construction to the campus.

Part of the considerations at this early stage is whether to recommend closing King Street, which runs between the back of the school and athletics fields, in order to connect buildings that are being planned for both sides of it. A recently completed traffic study of impacts of closing King Street is expected to be explained in detail at the next subcommittee meeting, tentatively scheduled for Feb. 19.

Llewelyn said he expects the discussion of King Street to help the subcommittee focus in on which of the six proposals might be favored by the group.

Recently, Sikorsky Credit Union contributed to a mini-grant for Stratford schools through the town’s BEST (Business Education Support Team) program. This past week, the grant recipient was announced at the Board of Education Administration Center.

Stratford’s BEST is designed to promote excellence by supporting teachers in their classroom efforts, and operates in many areas, from mentoring to scholarships. Sikorsky Credit Union is helping to fund the Mini-Grant Program, which has given Stratford’s teachers the opportunity to expand upon their creativity and enhance the educational experience for well over 50,000 students since its founding in 1987. Stratford ‘s BEST provides grants for innovative and outstanding projects that otherwise would not be funded.

The recipients for this mini grant were Robin Celentano and Renee DiMatteo of Chapel Street Elementary School. Their program is called “Ready, Set, Goals,” and demonstrates the important payoff when students set and reach both short-term and long-term financial goals. The program consists of a variety of activities emphasizing the importance of saving.

Robin Celentano, a fourth grade teacher at Chapel Street Elementary, was very excited about receiving this grant. “We are excited to partner with Sikorsky Credit Union to help our students learn financial literacy at a young age so they can carry these skills with them to adulthood.”

Mike Shirling, Sikorsky Credit Union’s Vice President of Retail Banking added “This is a great program that teaches the importance of financial responsibility. These are some of life’s most important lessons.”  Stratford’s BEST is one of many community organizations that receive support from Sikorsky Credit Union.

Mike Shirling, VP of Retail Delivery at Sikorsky Credit Union, Brittany Blake, Youth Initiative Coordinator at Sikorsky Credit Union, Robin Celentano, 4th Grade Teacher at Chapel St. Elementary School in Stratford, Bob David, BEST Committee Member (also an Executive Board Member of Sikorsky Credit Union) and Dr. Janet Robinson, Superintendent of Stratford schools.

St. Mark School celebrates Catholic Schools Week

St. Mark School joined Catholic schools across the country in observing the 41st annual Catholic Schools Week. This year’s national theme celebrates Catholic Schools as “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service,” which reflects St. Mark’s motto: “Academic Excellence, Faith and Service.”

“Faith” is a yearlong journey that begins when St. Mark School opens its doors in August. Religion class is taught every day, and each grade goes to church weekly and takes turns doing the readings at Mass once a month. Many students altar serve and volunteer their time teaching religious education to public school students after school. “Knowledge” is highly regarded at this nationally awarded Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. St. Mark School believes that technology increases students’ learning potential.

This year the school upgraded to the state-of-the-art fiber optic technology. This high capacity Internet line is particularly effective with the school’s iPad technology. “Service” is how students chose to celebrate their school’s Golden Jubilee this year. In honor of the school’s 50th Anniversary, St. Mark School is performing “50 Acts of Kindness” throughout the year. The students are excited to celebrate this historic occasion by “giving back” to others. To date, they have achieved 30 acts, with many service projects performed during Catholic Schools Week.

The week-long celebration of Faith, Knowledge and Service began with a school-wide assembly that opened a time capsule marked “Do not open until 2015,” buried by students and faculty 25 years ago. The school also hosted an Open House where student ambassadors and the lion mascot gave tours of the school. Other fun-filled events such as an indoor Winter Carnival, Faculty vs. Grade 8 Volleyball Game, Crazy Hat Day, and Science Fair also filled the busy week.

Stratford Public Schools have set the dates for registration of kindergarten students for the 2015-16 school year. Centralized registration will take place by appointment at the Stratford Academy/Johnson House in the Student Registration/Early Childhood Offices from Feb. 23 through March 20. Children who will be 5-years-old on or before Jan. 1, 2016 are eligible to begin kindergarten this August.

The Stratford Public Schools offer a full-day kindergarten program in every elementary school including Stratford Academy, the district magnet school. The Stratford Public Schools will no longer offer a half-day kindergarten program at Stratford Academy beginning with the 2015-16 school year.

Enrollment for the full-day kindergarten classes at Stratford Academy is limited. The Stratford Public Schools will utilize a lottery to fill the full-day kindergarten classes at Stratford Academy. Siblings of current kindergarten through grade 5 Stratford Academy students will receive a preference. The Stratford Public Schools will hold the lottery April 29, at 7 p.m., at Center School, 55 Sutton Avenue. The Stratford Public Schools must receive a completed kindergarten registration by March 27 in order to include that registration in the lottery.

Students may receive an assignment of a full-day kindergarten program outside their attendance zone (neighborhood) school because there are a limited number of kindergarten classrooms in some schools. These children typically return to their designated attendance zone (neighborhood) school for first grade.

Proposed schools budget up 3.5%

The cost of more staff for an influx of special education students is the big reason the Stratford Board of Education budget may rise by 3.5%.

Superintendent Janet Robinson unveiled her proposed 2015-16 school year budget last Tuesday to the Board of Education. The proposed $101.38-million budget is $3.4 million more than the current budget.

Robinson said that a major driver for increase will be an addition of 22 special education students in the district, rather than having those children educated outside of Stratford.

The line for special education and pupil services will rise from $22,717,605 to $23,383,327, an increase of more than $665,000 or 2.93%.

“We will look to set up programs in the district rather than have them go to another school situation,” Robinson said Monday, noting that Stratford schools will have better control of programming.

Parents would also prefer to have their children in town as well, Robinson said.

Overall, teacher salaries would increase more than 4% to $48,307,657. Robinson attributed the projected increase to contractually agreed to raises in staff salaries.

Classroom support for the district will rise nearly 15% to $2.4 million, while plant operations will increase to $3.858 million, a 6.7% jump.

Stratford schools will have a little help with adding space as they expect to receive four portable classrooms from Trumbull schools to be added on to the elementary schools, which are facing crowding issues.

Robinson’s budget does find some savings in transportation, as general transportation would drop by nearly 3% to $1.9 million while special education transportation costs would fall by about 2% to $2.573 million.

Robinson said the overall budget would have increased by about 7% if not for cutting out requests from building principals for new staff.

“There were so many cuts in personnel. We are running very lean,” she said.

Robinson’s budget was set to be reviewed on Wednesday by the Board of Education.
