Sixty-one Stratford residents were among the 601 degree and certificate recipients at Housatonic Community College’s recent 48th Commencement.

The graduates, clad in the dark blue Housatonic caps and gowns, gathered at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard to be honored for their achievements by a panel of dignitaries that included Dr. Paul Broadie II, HCC’s new president, attending his first commencement. With its 601 degree and certificate recipients, the class of 2015 is the third largest in the college history, behind The Class of 2014 with 668 recipients and the Class of 2013 with 636.

“It is very meaningful for me to stand before you this evening as the fifth president of Housatonic,” Dr. Broadie said. “As President, I am very proud to address this amazing class as one of my first official duties at the helm of this fine college.”

Housatonic has served as a foundation that fueled the graduates’ intellectual, personal and professional growth, he said. It served as a beacon of hope for them and a place where dreams became a reality.

“As you move beyond these walls, reflect on your success,” he said. “Reflect on the obstacles you overcame to get to this point. The same drive and passion that brought you this far will take you well into the future.”

Stratford student Jenna R. Greenhill was one of six HCC students who maintained a perfect 4.0 average. She received the President’s Medallion for Academic Achievement for her accomplishment.

On Wednesday, June 3, in a gymnasium filled with parents, friends, family, staff members, and administration, 21 young men and women from Bunnell and Stratford High Schools took the first big step in their professional careers. These graduates from the Health & Medical Careers Pathway program officially met the requirements for certified nursing assistant, medical assistant, and dental assistant as prescribed by the state of Connecticut.

Over the past several months, students completed intensive training and clinical internships at local healthcare facilities including Lord Chamberlain, Griffin Hospital, Trumbull Smiles, and the private practice of Dr. Dennis Williams to prepare for the rigorous certification exams.

All students in the program will be continuing their education after high school at colleges such as UConn, Quinnipiac University, Western CT State University, Sacred Heart University, The College of New Rochelle, Gateway Community College, etc.

Valedictorian of the class, Daphney Jean-Pierre, spoke of how the three year pathway program ignited a passion in her for healthcare and that her time spent completing her clinical hours at Lord Chamberlain prepared her for both the positive and negative aspects of nursing. Instructor Sharon Foran shared this sentiment with her graduating students, “On the first day of your sophomore year I told you — do not go into health care for the money, it has to be your passion. I hope in the last three years it has become your passion and you wake up every day eager to learn for yourself and care for others.” These young adults are clearly eager to learn and on their way to successful careers in healthcare.

Stratford High School will have a new principal next year as Joe Corso is moving on.

Corso, who worked for three years as the top official at SHS, said Monday that he plans to take the same job at Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford, where he lives. The Wallingford Board of Education approved his hiring last week.

“I love Stratford, but Wallingford is my hometown,” Corso said Monday, just a few days after leading the Stratford High School graduation ceremony at Penders Field. Corso said the students and parents knew of Corso’s departure prior to the ceremony.

The Lyman Hall job “is a great opportunity for my family.”

Corso said that only one stoplight stands between his home and Lyman Hall.

Corso, who was assistant principal at Bunnell High for three years, said he has mixed emotions about leaving, but had told administrators that he would consider a job in Wallingford if one became available. Corso will take over for David Bryant, who is retiring from Lyman Hall at the end of the year.

This will be the second high school principal departure in Stratford this year as Bunnell Principal Dudley Orr is retiring at the end of the year. Nancy Dowling, an assistant principal at Bunnell, was chosen as Orr’s successor.

The Board of Education will likely discuss hiring Corso’s replacement at the next school board meeting on June 29. The regular meeting set for Monday night was canceled.

More than 250 Stratford Elementary students participated in the EpicKidsRun26.1! on Friday, June 5, at Short Beach. Throughout the 2014-15 school year, the students in grades K-6 took part in a weekly hour-long program that began in October 2014 and finished with their last steps at the EpicKidsRun event.

Lordship School parents, Dung Stafford and Cynthia Casinelli created the event and also served as coaches.

Throughout the year, students learned running fundamentals, including stretching techniques, warm-up, proper running techniques and cool-down, slowly building endurance, and building mental stamina.

Twenty trophies were awarded to the top runners but all students who crossed the finish line earned a medal.

“We were inspired to make these differences in our community through EpicKidsRun26.1!, but to see it all come to fruition was overwhelming.” Stafford and Casinelli said.

The Stratford PTA Council and Superintendent Dr. Janet Robinson approved this event at the beginning of the 2014-15 school year. It was well received by all district elementary schools with participants and parent volunteers involved in running the weekly program.

“We thank all the volunteers, coaches, sponsors and administrators who helped make this happen, and we look forward to a bigger and better program next year!” Stafford concluded.

Preschoolers get visit from area police officers

ABC Child Care & Learning Center recently received visits from officers with the Stratford, Trumbull and Torrington police departments.

The officers gave the pre-school students a hands-on presentation. The visit included the Stratford Police Hummer vehicle and several Trumbull police motorcycles. The children were read stories discussing safety tips and they had the chance to explore the Hummer and motorcycles.

The students enjoyed the officers’ visit, and the learning center is very appreciative of the departments for all they do to serve the community, including sharing time with children.

High fives, handshakes and a few happy dances colored the evening at Stratford High School’s 2015 graduation ceremony.

The cloudy skies above Penders Field couldn’t dampen the joyful feelings among the more than 200 graduates or the audience of family and friends happy to see their graduates make that special walk to get their diplomas. Many of the red- and yellow-clad graduates waved as they marched onto the field to take their seats. They later thanked and hugged teachers and friends upon getting those most valued pieces of paper.

While the day is an exciting and happy occasion, SHS Valedictorian Alex Masi said graduation day shouldn’t be the end of the learning process.

“How can you expect a young person to identify themselves and their true passions by the end of high school?” Masi said. “This is why you must continue to expand the chapter of your life titled ‘learning.’ This chapter is synonymous with our growth as individuals. This is what our past has set us up to do. Never forget that. Whether or not you have a keen education from a textbook or a lecture or a teacher, learning is everywhere and it is what defines us all.”

Masi encouraged his classmates to “discover something new for the joy of finding it.”

Senior Class President Kylee Vitka-Lainey echoed the call for continued learning, saying that graduation is only the beginning.

“We have just started learning. We have so much more to learn about life and ourselves. We have so many more chapters that we have been preparing for,” she said. “As you president for the past two years, I am grateful to have shared the beginning chapters with you.”

Vitka-Lainey added that the diplomas the students are walking out with are not the most important things the graduates will take with them. They will also carry responsibility, self-assurance, accountability, stamina and the knowledge that they never quit even when times became difficult.

“The future is bright for us. Regardless of which direction we are heading off in a few short months, we will always be connected,” she said.

Salutatorian Nathaneal Domschine said the Class of 2015 should be ready for change challenging times ahead.

“We cannot always control the change in our lives. Life always has a monkey wrench to throw in our plans,” he said. “Many of us have different plans for the days to come, yet not all of those plans will be achieved as desired. But that’s OK. As country singer Jimmy Dean once said, ‘I can’t always change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination.’”

Principal Joe Corso wished his outgoing seniors the best, but hoped that the students’ best years were not their times at SHS.

“If you look back at your years at Stratford High School and say those were the best four years of your life, we have failed you. When you are 40 years old — I know that seems far away, but trust me, it comes up fast — and you look back at your experience at Stratford High, you should realize that high school was not the best four years of your life. Rather, let Stratford High be the springboard that propels you into adulthood as a prepared learner, trusted friend and responsible, moral citizen.”

For one evening, however, graduation was a highlight of the four years and the students soaked it in while thinking about what comes next.

Jesse Rosa, 17, simply said he felt “good” upon graduating.

“I’m thinking about going forward and doing me,” said Rosa, who plans to go to Housatonic Community College and eventually go into the military. Rosa’s goal is to become a police officer.

“It really feels wild,” he said.

Anna Velasquez, 17, said the idea of graduating from high school felt “shocking” and she still didn’t think it was over.

“It still doesn’t really feel real to me, I don’t know. It hasn’t hit me yet,” Velasquez said, a broad smile on her face as she held her diploma. Her next stop: Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Psychology is a possible major for her.

Thinking about college convinced her that it indeed was real.

“I think I’m mostly thinking forward. We all worked so hard in high school and now I’m just excited to get a new start and work hard again,” she said.

Raiquonn Wong, 18, said the special day left him feeling great. “I’m ready to start the next chapter of my life,” he said. “The future is now and I’m ready.”

He plans to go to culinary school with the goal of becoming a chef, just like his father.

“My dad was a chef and I want to be just like him,” Wong said.

“Amazing” was the feeling for Natacha Jean, 18, getting hugs from well-wishers after the ceremony was over.

Jean said she was to recall her high school years while thinking ahead to attending Housatonic Community College before moving on to Southern Connecticut State University to study nursing. First, though, she’s headed for a nursing internship in Texas.

“I’m happy I accomplished something like this,” she said. “It was really nerve-wracking, but now that [it’s done], we walked and got our diplomas, it feels amazing. It’s the best feeling in the world.”

Families sat in the bleachers and stood by the fence to try to get a better look at Bunnell High School’s Class of 2015.

Students were ready to move on, parents were misty-eyed, and proud teachers and school administrators watched as 248 students participated in the graduation ceremony at the school’s football field.

Salutatorian Tyler Stefan LeComer was praised and celebrated by classmates as Principal Dudley Orr discussed his many accomplishments, some of which include earning a 3.98 grade-point average, completing seven advanced placement college credit classes, scoring 2,190 on his SAT and becoming the school’s first National Merit Scholarship award winner.

“What that means is that Tyler scored in the top 1,600 students, out of a million-and-a-half students who took the SATs in 2013,.” Orr said, to applause and whistles from the crowd.

LeComer was also on Bunnell’s cross county, indoor track and outdoor track teams for all four years and was captain of those teams during his senior year.

His proud mother watched with love, and smiled as she stood up front by the fence. She, his family, friends and classmates cheered at LeComer’s accomplishments.

LeComer could have soaked in the moment and spoken only about himself after Orr finished telling the crowd that LeComer is attending Harvard University. Instead, he, thanked Orr and praised Athletic Director Dave Johnson and others at the school.

LeComer also tipped his hat to his best friend, Brady Shea, a friend since fourth grade and a lab partner since eighth grade.

“I’ve got to give you a lot of credit, Brady, for being able to handle my frequent sarcastic comments and antics. I want to thank you for sticking with me through thick and thin, and I can’t wait to be living just two miles away from you for the next four years,” LeComer added.  Incidentally, Shea is a member of the Honor Society and graduated summa cum laude.

The school year saw great accomplishments from BHS Valedictorian Juliana Marie Sharp. Orr noted her 4.48 GPA and that she completed eight advance placement classes. Some of Sharp’s other accomplishments include membership in the National Honor Society, co-founder, treasurer and president of Bunnell Interact Club, and receiving the Harvard Book Award in 2014.

Orr also noted Sharp’s talent as a gifted violinist, as she won the JC Yale School of Music competition and was accepted into the Juilliard School of the Arts in New York. Sharp will be attending Cleveland Institute of Music at Case Western University.

Sharp evoked awe as she presented examples of people who overcame failure and cynicism towards their abilities.

“Ironically, failure and success are intrinsically intertwined,” Sharp said. “Just as none of us learned to walk without stumbling, no one has achieved success without experiencing a multitude of failures. We must not be afraid of the failures, which are inevitable, and instead learn from them and persist through them.An impoverished Walt Disney was once told that he ‘lacked imagination and had terrible ideas,’ but instead of giving up, he learned from his critics and eventually became one of the most popular names in the entertainment industry.”

Class President Ricky Belizaire also praised his fellow graduates’ accomplishments.

“The Class of 2015 is comprised of some of the brightest and most talented students Bunnell has ever seen,” Belizaire said. “ We are a class of athletes, actors, musicians, environmentalists and philanthropists. We have completed 12 years of the standard education system, and, that my friends, is something to celebrate.”

The celebration continued throughout the night, as family and friends remained outside during the ceremony despite dark clouds and impending rain. The new graduates were received with flowers, balloons, and fist pounds as the diplomas were awarded.

Giovanni-Marie Roper gave the closing speech. She told her classmates there are going to be opportunities for them, and they should release their potential and make the most of them.

“The world needs your potential and everything you have to offer,” she said. “Don’t let the world miss out on your unique personality, talent, and wisdom. There are things in this world that need to be done that only you can do.”

And the graduating class of 2015 had plans for themselves and things they planned to do. They shared their plans and commented on the ceremony.

“I am on my way to Franklin Pierce University,” said Erica Lynn Joyce, who plans to study psychology.

William Chonka will attend Marywood University in Scranton, Pa., where he plans to major in marketing. Before that, he plans to play baseall with friends and enjoy a family trip to Florida.

Ronnie Rossomando, a star on Bunnell’s baseball team who was recently drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, plans to continue his education at the University of Connecticut, though he hasn’t chosen a major yet.

“It was great, but a little sad to see everyone go,” Rossomando said.

Michelle Petrino will attend the University of New Haven to study dental hygiene. She’s ready to get started, even as a freshly minted high school graduate.

“I am excited for it, “Petrino said. “I am hoping it will be a great experience.”

Salute to Stratford and Bunnell graduates

Congratulations to the 2015 graduates of Stratford and Bunnell high schools. We’re sure many of you think that the four years you were high school students took a long time. As you get older, you’ll realize just how fast the time flew by.

Many of you young men and women are heading off to colleges or technical schools after a two-month respite. Others will join the military, proudly serving to defend this country. And more will enter the work force, hoping to build a better future for themselves and their families.

As you make your way into the world, remember your friends and the people who stuck by you in good times and bad. Also, don’t forget to treat everyone with respect, even if your job title may sound glossier than those of your contemporaries.

Lastly, be sure to have some fun and embrace life’s challenges. Life won’t always be easy, but it’s all right to enjoy yourself and smile. Just as you did on the night you received your diplomas.

Much success to you, Class of 2015.

In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, State Representatives Laura Hoydick (R-120), Ben McGorty (R-122) and State Senator Kevin Kelly (R-21) joined together to sponsor an essay contest open to all sixth grade students in Stratford. The contest asked students to compose a 300-word original essay about a Connecticut woman that made a contribution to the state and/or nation and how it affected them.

Submissions were received and judged by Stratford school administrators, with winners being selected at St. Mark’s Elementary School and Lordship Elementary School.

At St. Mark’s Elementary School, Julia Dabrowski was selected as the runner-up with her essay on Joan Joyce, the famous athlete and coach who set milestones and records in basketball, golf, volleyball and softball. The winner was Kim Wu with her essay on author, activist and lecturer Hellen Keller who was born deaf and blind.

At Lordship Elementary, Donna Buruca was the runner-up with her writing on figure skater Dorothy Hamill. Jack Olexovitch was the winner with his essay on athlete, coach and Stratford hometown sports icon Donna Lopiano.

“It was wonderful to see so much participation by Stratford sixth graders in this essay contest,” said Rep. Hoydick. “All the essays from every entrant were very impressive, reflecting the diversity and value of the contributions of so many important women in Connecticut history. I offer my congratulations to the winners at both schools for their excellent essays.”

“There were so many great essays from the sixth graders who participated in this contest, and they all deserve a lot of credit for their work,” said Rep. McGorty. “The essays by the winners were especially informative and inspiring, and they have earned this recognition for their enthusiasm and scholarship.”

“It was a pleasure giving the students an opportunity to really showcase their talents we’re very proud of them,” said Sen. Kelly.

The winners were presented with official citations from the Connecticut General Assembly for their achievements. This essay contest was the first of what the legislators say will be an annual competition.

St. Mark’s Elementary School essay winners are presented with state citations: Rep. Laura Hoydick, runner-up Julia Dabrowski, winner Kim Wu, and Rep. Ben McGorty.

Bunnell technology teacher participates in externship

This summer, 10 Connecticut high school and college educators will trade pencils for laser engravers and fabrication tools as they work as interns (or ‘externs’) in advanced manufacturing facilities throughout the state.

Now in its 11th year, the teacher externship program immerses instructors in the latest industry practices and technologies so that when they return to their classrooms in the fall, they can pass along new ideas and information to their students.

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) administers the program on behalf of the College of Technology’s Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing (COT-RGNGM), a National Science Foundation Center of Excellence.

“Through these externships, teachers get to see firsthand the skills that are needed by today’s manufacturers, so they can best prepare tomorrow’s workforce,” says Andrea Comer, executive director of CBIA’s Education Foundation.

The ultimate goals of educator externships are to better prepare students for jobs in high-tech manufacturing and to help Connecticut’s manufacturers maintain a skilled, competitive workforce.

Advanced manufacturing is the state’s greatest source of exports, a major producer of high-paying jobs, and a significant multiplier of economic activity across other sectors. Connecticut is home to about 4,100 manufacturers employing 164,000 people.

“This program helps us engage and motivate the next generation of workers, providing them with the education and skills needed to successfully pursue careers in manufacturing,” says Dr. Karen Wosczyna-Birch, executive director of the COT-RCNGM.

Each teacher will spend 160 hours in a manufacturing facility before implementing a work-based learning project for their students based on the externship experience. Work-based projects give students a more realistic understanding of how classroom learning is applied on the job.

Educators participating in the externship program are:

Lia Cunningham of Middletown, teaches integrated science at Windsor High School and will be working at Title River Brewery (Canton)

Kevin Dake of Northfield, teaches physics at Litchfield High School and will be working at Mallory Industries (Farmington)

Lawrence Farrell of Stratford, teaches technology at Bunnell High School (Stratford) and will be working at Ashcroft Inc. (Stratford)

Steven Kirstukas of Avon, teaches mechanical engineering at Central Connecticut State University and will be working at Belcan Corporation (Windsor)

Susan Margolis of Ridgefield, teaches technology at Danbury High School and will be working at Macroscopic Solutions (Tolland)

Robert Michalak of South Windsor, teaches technology at Stafford High School and will be working at Atlas Metalworks LLC (South Windsor);

Rich Reynolds of Newtown, teaches technology and engineering at Darien High School and will be working at Lacey Manufacturing (Bridgeport)

Robert Riley of Franklin, teaches technology and CAD at Plainfield High School and will be working at Web Industries (Dayville);

Brian Waddicor of Mystic, teaches technology at Montville High School and will be working at Acme Wire Products (Mystic)

Eugene Zukowski of Killingworth, teaches engineering at Old Saybrook High School and will be working at Sound Manufacturing (Old Saybrook)

The teachers receive a stipend to cover their time working at the host manufacturing companies and implementing work-based projects into their curricula.
