Soundkeeper has created a customized storm drain marker that volunteers from Bunnell High School’s Environmental Club recently used to mark storm drains around Stratford, more specifically around Bunnel High School. These storm drain markers are educating residents that what goes into storm drains eventually ends up in the Sound, thus anything but pure, clean water dumped down drains will have a negative effect on water quality, becoming a factor in beach closures and shellfish bans.

The high school students are learning good environmental stewardship and passing it along to other members of the Stratford community so that we can protect our environment and enjoy all that Stratford has to offer.

Third grader raises money to fight cancer

Colin Bauer decided in early October to make pink and white rainbow loom bracelets to help raise money to support the fight against breast cancer. He wanted to sell them to his classmates for $.50 for a single bracelet and $1 for a fishtail.

Colin said he wanted to “Give the money that he raised to help the people who are sick to help them get better.”

After getting permission from his school to sell the bracelets in the third grade classes, Colin along with his classmate Tilly Pethrick began looming. There were so many “orders” that other classmates also helped making bracelets. They collected $124.

The money was donated to the Norma Pfreim Breast Cancer Center. Colin has already decided that he wants to raise more money next year.

Board acts on career education; four members finish terms

Monday’s Board of Education meeting was a combination of thanks and farewells to four members who were serving at the final meeting of their four-year term and unanimous votes of approval on 10 action items.

Board Chairman Gavin Forrester and members Joseph Crudo, Janice Daponte and Charles Lindberg came to the end of their term, received commendations from schools Superintendent Dr. Janet Robinson and offered their own words of appreciation.

Their final meeting was much more than ceremony, however, as they proceeded through a full agenda, including addressing three items in Career & Technology Education.

The board unanimously approved planning and development of a three-course program in game making for high school technology students. A board memorandum on the subject states that the program would “unleash student imaginations while challenging them to think analytically to design and create 3-D digital games” where the “future job forecast for careers” in this area is “positive.”

The program will replace Graphic Communications, Advanced Graphic Communications and Communication Technology courses.

Also approved by unanimous vote of the board was adding medical assistant certification standards to the Pre-Nursing Program. The board description of the change says that “in addition to the standards within the Pre-Nursing curriculum, students will be introduced to Medical Assistant standards,” including electrocardiography techniques, phlebotomy procedures, patient intake procedures, and medical billing and coding. With this enhancement students can graduate from Stratford public schools with a certification as a medical assistant.

A third upgrade to career education was approved by the board, also unanimously. This action gives students the opportunity to choose to take Health & Medical Careers courses at a more intellectually rigorous level, which will allow students to earn “honors” credit for the work.

The hiring of a transportation auditing company was also approved to examine the possibilities for improved routing of the current bus service.

The next meeting of the Board of Education, which will welcome four members elected by the public in November, is set for Dec. 16 at Center School.

Mentoring training Friday; program is growing here

An information and training session will be held this afternoon for adults who wish to learn how to become a mentor for a young person in Stratford or brush up on their mentoring skills.

The session is today, Dec. 6, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Oronoque Village South Club Building and will be conducted by Stratford Public Schools, which coordinates the mentoring program in town, in collaboration with the Governor’s Prevention Partnership Program.

The program refers to a mentor as “a wise and trusted friend and guide.”

Stratford leads Mayors’ Mentoring Challenge

Stratford is a leading town in the regional Mayors’ Mentoring Challenge program, in which the mayors of Stratford, Bridgeport and Norwalk urge members of the community to become a mentor and urge other towns to join the Challenge. In the past few years, Monroe, Trumbull and Westport have joined.

Jody Harkins, the wife of Mayor John Harkins, has taken the program under her wing as the town’s first lady and reports that the program has “roughly tripled since I took it on and with the help of the mayor, who has urged town workers to become mentors.”

“Stratford has become the leader of the whole Mayors’ Mentoring Challenge by being ahead in the numbers [of mentors] and with John taking the lead” by urging town employees to become a mentor, said Mrs. Harkins. “We are setting a model that other towns are following.”

Mrs. Harkins said, “The two busiest people in town — the mayor and the superintendent of schools — make the time” to mentor a child. “Not that they have the time, they find the time,” she said, “because of the fact that the program is important. We’re helping kids.”

Stratford Police Deputy Chief Joseph McNeil is one of the many who serve as a young person’s mentor here in Stratford.

An information and training session will be held this afternoon for adults who wish to learn how to become a mentor for a young person in Stratford or brush up on their mentoring skills.

The session is Friday, Dec.

Stratford native and aclaimed violinist Kersten Stevens returns to the area for a holiday concert Dec. 22.

Stratford native and aclaimed violinist Kersten Stevens returns to the area for a holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 22.

Bunnell High School graduate Kersten Stevens, who has been dubbed Queen of the Sacred Violin, will return to Connecticut to celebrate the sounds of the season with An Inspired Christmas: A Holiday Concert on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m., at Fairfield Theatre Company’s Stage One, 70 Sanford Street, Fairfield.

The event is Stevens’ first full-length concert in Connecticut in more than five years. With arrangements from her Christmas album The Gift, and crowd favorites from the Inspire Me album, “The versatile Kersten brandishes her bow like a magic wand, transforming Holiday classics into marvelous jazz performances,” according to The Black Gospel Blog.

Accomplished both in the jazz and faith-based arenas, Stevens’ career began in Stratford. She has opened for the legendary Ray Charles, Denzel Washington and President Barack Obama. She is a three-time Amateur Night at the Apollo winner, a three-time “Showtime at the Apollo” champion and continues a close mentorship with the world-renowned violinist Regina Carter.

Her newest album, Inspire Me, has received critical acclaim, and her I’ve Been Inspired Tour kicked off with a sold-out album release party at the World Famous Apollo Theater sound stage.

The Fairfield concert will feature El Shafer on trumpet, Miki Hayama on keys, David Rosenthal on guitar, Parker McAllister on bass and Russell Carter on drums.

Loss of state money cuts after-school programs

The future of programs funded with grant money is always questionable. And this year, with state budget cuts, Stratford’s middle schools felt the blow.

Since 2006, Wooster and Flood middle schools each have won $150,000 annual state grants that were used to fund after-school programs: FLASH — Flood Learns After School Hours, and at Wooster, CLASP — Creative Learning After School Program.

The programs were passed over by the state Department of Education’s After-School Grant Program for the fall 2013 through spring 2015 cycle.

In their place, the Stratford Board of Education, school administrators and teachers, with PTA support, are doing their best to provide after-school support for students (and parents) who want and need it.

In CLASP and FLASH, students had access to up to 300 hours of structured, after-school activities that included academics, wellness time and a snack. Parents were charged nominal fees for each of the eight- to 10-week sessions. Without the programs, the schools’ administrators estimate they can currently offer less than 50% of those hours.

Wooster Middle School Principal Jack Lynch estimates that the CLASP program at Wooster supported about 90 of his 550 students. Lynch said his after-school activities have been cut to two days a week, usually ending by 3:45, sometimes as late as 5:30. Current organized activities are intramural sports and arts-related, with homework help being offered by teachers on an as-needed basis. Students previously making use of after-school support are still getting time after school, Lynch said, but less than half the time, and without the structured academic component.

“After school is a critical time for a child,” said Lynch. “In these programs, the parents know their children are involved, that they are safe and secure. We really do miss the program. It was systemic to what we do here.”

Flood’s principal, Jack Dellapiano, said he was “taken aback” when he learned the program had not been funded through 2015. However, the schools and the board have some funding set aside from small fees collected in previous years and from a Board of Education intramural budget, he said. This money is available because of a required “sustainability plan” written into the grants.

“Right now, we have clubs and activities after school that mirror some of the same activities we had with FLASH,” Dellapiano said. “We are by no means offering the same, but we are coming close with some of the activities that were well-attended and successful. It does speak to the dedication of everyone involved.”

The loss of the program is a blow not just to the families who relied on the program for support but to the cross section of community members, teachers, administrators, and parents who invested time and energy into creating the programs’ success.

“The kids are disappointed. The parents are disappointed,” Dellapiano said. “As soon as we learned about this, we started to talk. [The programs now are] going to be abbreviated, but they are going to be better than having nothing.”

Valuable programs lost

After-school programs in Stratford’s middle schools provided services for up to 300 students each year, over the course of three eight- or 10-week sessions. Programs started at 2:45 and ran to 5:30 Tuesdays through Fridays. Cost of transportation, program facilitation, coaching, teaching supplies, food, and program support was covered by the grant funds.

The programs like CLASP and FLASH support students academically and emotionally, and help ease the burden of working-parent households. The two Stratford programs were so well run and received, said Pat Naylor, grants coordinator for the Stratford Board of Education, that they were recognized as two of the top in the state.

Research compiled by the Connecticut After School Network shows that well-designed after-school programs have been shown to reduce juvenile crime, help increase future graduation rates, support working families, and boost the economies that rely on those families.

The CLASP and FLASH grants were partnership grants, in which Stratford Community Services provided program facilitators and developed leadership activities and service opportunities for students. The schools also partnered with the town health department, police department and Sterling House.

Less state money given to fewer programs

Naylor wrote all of the grant applications with Tammy Trojanowski, administrator of the town of Stratford’s Community Services office. Since 2006, the pair has coordinated their efforts to ensure the applications were competitive.

“We worked really hard to position for this funding,” Naylor said. “You have to look at the grant application and what they are asking. They give you points and there is a rubric. You have to make sure you answer succinctly all the questions.”

The state Department of Education’s 56-page grant application offers three options — elementary, middle/high school, and a STEM (or science, technology, engineering and mathematics) option. This means that after-school programs at any grade level, and including specialized programs, are competing for funding from the same pool of money.

Naylor said she believes part of the reason for grant loss this year was twofold. First, a $1-million line item was cut as part of the state’s extensive budget cuts last June. Second, Naylor said, the limit for funding per program was raised from $150,000 to $200,000. That meant that grant awardees could receive more money but fewer awards would be available. The After-School Grant Program awards approximately 20 to 25 grants per two-year cycle, and only about 10% of those are middle school and high school grants.

Naylor, who said it was “a little frustrating for us, because they used [our program] as the model,” is already planning for the next grant cycle.

“It takes so long to build a high-quality program, so it is, of course, frustrating,” she said. “I think we did an amazing job and it was a big disappointment.”

State Rep. Laura Hoydick (R-120) visited Lordship Elementary School recently to congratulate Johmalie Rivera and Keryna Upchurch, the winners of an art project competition she sponsored on what it means to be from Stratford. Sixth grade students in Stratford were asked to participate by creating an art piece, either drawing, painting or collage that reflects the meaning of being a Stratford resident. Rivera and Upchurch were selected as the winners by the school district’s administration and faculty. They were among numerous entrants. Winners were chosen based on appearance, research, and insight into Stratford. Hoydick thanked all the students and staff for their participation and personally congratulated the winners.

“Seeing the positives about Stratford through the eyes of our sixth grade students is very affirming,” said Hoydick. “I’m happy they identify the good things about Stratford, and I’m thrilled that they were able to share their thoughts with us through the creative process of visual art.”

“We are so proud of both Keryna and Johmalie for taking advantage of this opportunity to highlight the history and diversity which makes Stratford so unique,” said Principal Kate Murphy. “Our thanks go to Rep. Hoydick for sharing the idea for this contest with us.”

Hoydick presented the winners with certificates from the House of Representatives. The winning artwork is currently prominently on display at the State Capitol in Hartford and will continue to be throughout the month of November.

More cops at schools as massacre anniversary nears

Stratford Schools Superintendent Dr. Janet Robinson and Stratford Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour have a coordinated plan for increased police presence around the schools in town before and after the Dec. 14 one-year anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Robinson said, “We have really tight security in place. We are reinforcing what we have been doing already.”

Also, she said that every day “we have [police officers] in the two middle schools and the two high schools.”

“I have spoken with Chief Ridenhour and he has assured that police would have increased presence around the schools,” Robinson said. “Stratford police have worked hand in hand to make sure everything is secure. We have gotten instant response whenever we’ve had a question. I am very impressed.”

Robinson and Ridenhour both declined to provide details of the security plan around the anniversary, but Ridenhour did say, “There will probably be a little extra presence around the schools. Also we are mindful that Newtown and Monroe may need manpower.” He said he is coordinating an offer of help to those towns through the Fairfield County Chiefs Association.

The chief said that anniversaries of tragedies such as the Columbine shooting and 9-11 do bring more attention to security measures. “And Sandy Hook is always on our mind,” he said.

Robinson was the superintendent of schools in Newtown when the massacre occurred and during its aftermath.
