Lordship Elementary School’s first grade class, led by teacher Sarah Pucci, were recipients of a grand prize in the national DuPont Challenge Science Writing Competition. On Friday, April 22, Pucci and her class were invited to a conference call, orchestrated by DuPont, to hear the exciting news. “The students and I were so surprised by this honor,” said Pucci. “I’m still in shock that my class won! I totally downplayed the “challenge” aspect of the project and focused on the learning.” More than 9,000 entries from all 50 U.S. states, Canada, and U.S. territories were submitted to The DuPont Challenge, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary as the nation’s premier science writing competition.

The “1st Grade Pucci’s Pink Group Team’s” entry, “Life Cycle of a Butterfly” was selected from hundreds of K-5 entries across the United States and Canada. As a grand prize winner, DuPont will host a “Science Is Fun Day” at the school as well as provide a Britannica Digital Learning E-book collection and Britannica’s 5 iOS science apps. Pucci also earned an all expense-paid trip to the 2017 NSTA Conference on Science convention in Los Angeles, Calif. “I am so proud of this accomplishment,” added Kate Murphy, Lordship Elementary School principal. “Mrs. Pucci took the initiative to expand a learning lesson into this national competition and was able to generate lots of excitement about the challenge with her students which in the end gave her, our students and our elementary school national recognition.”

Pucci and her team are organizing the “Science is Fun Day” before the end of the school year. “We can’t wait!” concluded Pucci.

In the Spotlight holds auditions for Urinetown May 16 and 17

InTheSpotlightIn the Spotlight, a not-for-profit summer theater program for area youth entering grades 8-12 (including graduating seniors), has announced audition dates of May 16 and May 17, as well as a callback date of May 19. All auditions, callbacks, and rehearsals will take place at the historic White House on the grounds of the Shakespeare Theater in Stratford, 1850 Elm Street.

In the Spotlight, with a resume including more than 25 years of productions, and boasting alumni such as Javier Colon, begins a new era of in theater with support from Sterling House and as an umbrella organization of the Mighty Quinn Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation with a successful record of supporting the theater arts and education, including founding Shakespeare Academy @ Stratford. This association is especially significant for In the Spotlight students as they will now have the opportunity to enhance their theater experience through participation in a variety of master classes and training from numerous theater professionals all culminating with the musical production of Urinetown, directed by Kevin Miller, and staged at the Klein Memorial Auditorium, performances on July 21, 22, and 23.

This year’s chosen musical, Urinetown, offers students a significant number of major roles as it cleverly satirizes our legal system, capitalism, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics, and class conflict, as well as the broadway musical itself as an art form. As such, it provides a valuable learning experience for any young person interested in musical theater. Sue Wright, president of the Mighty Quinn Foundation stated, “We know people will be saying “Urinetown?!” Why would I want to go to a show with a title like that?” Okay — we agree it is a bad title but it is a great play. Urinetown will make audiences laugh but it also explores real social issues. It will challenge the audience and, more importantly, the performers, to think and ask themselves — “Am I willing to do what is right?”

Cost of the program is $150 for Stratford residents and $200 for non-residents, with scholarship aid available in certain circumstances. To fund the program this year In the Spotlight is running an Indiegogo campaign and is also looking for former students to help with this year’s production and masterclasses. For more information, to donate to the program, to register for auditions, or to volunteer visit inthespotlight.org.

About 100 Quinnipiac University graduate and undergraduate students spent the spring semester preparing Stratford and Bunnell high school students for careers in diagnostic imaging, nursing, occupational and physical therapy, social work and as physician assistants. After conversing via email, the students met for the first time April 29 for a special meet-and-greet on the University’s North Haven Campus.

Marci Niemeyer, a first year physician assistant student at Quinnipiac, greeted Bunnell sophomore Jasmine Ochoa with a big hug.

“We’ve been emailing for weeks,” Niemeyer said. “We talked about being a physician assistant, but we also talked about personal stuff, too. I got to know Jasmine. I’m hoping my experiences in life can help her.”

Ochoa said getting to know Niemeyer has only increased her desire to be a physician assistant.

“Marci has really helped me to understand what a PA does and what is to be expected,” Ochoa added.

The Quinnipiac students spent the semester answering questions from and offering insight to about 100 Bunnell of Stratford and Stratford high school students.

“We also work with professional mentors, but the Quinnipiac students are a little closer in age to our students,” said Christina Rusate, a business teacher at Stratford High School. “They can talk to our students about the college process and they can provide insight into different majors. My students were so nervous about meeting their mentors. It’s like a blind date.”

In addition to meeting the students in person, the Quinnipiac students led nine interactive clinical skills stations, ranging from “Curing Disease before it Happens,” to “Therapeutic Use of Play.”

“Through the mentoring program, our students further developed their communication skills, formed partnerships with caring young adults and gathered information so they are able to make informed academic and career decisions,” said Vicki Priddle, a business teacher at Bunnell.

Five Housatonic Community College students, Blake Bennett of Washington Depot, Brandon D’Agostino and Nichole Dineson, of Milford, Nicholas Saint of Norwalk, and Christopher Torok of Stratford, comprised the HCC team who competed at the Community College Quadcopter Challenge on Friday, May 13 at the Konover Center, University of Hartford.

The challenge, sponsored by the NASA Connecticut Space Grant Consortium, required that those invited to participate build a Quadcopter (drone) and learn to navigate and put it through its paces. Five teams of five students each will compete.

The students were offered two kits, one more complicated than the other. They had to build it from scratch, requiring ability in engineering, soldering, CAD software, 3D printing, and laser cutting among others. Then, they had to learn to fly it over a course that including obstacles such as towers, water, changing wind, swapping equipment, etc.

The HCC team chose the more difficult kit. They built it. They tested it at HCC. It flew just fine.

The challenge is designed to encourage community college students in Science Engineering, Technology and Math (STEM) programs, and to engage more community colleges in these programs.

Team members Chris Torok, Nick Saint, Brandon D'Agostino, Nichole Dineson and Blake Bennett. The team assembled the quadcopter, designed and 3D printed the rotor protection, and integrated a suite of sensors including real-time video and ambient data display — all in two months while keeping up with their demanding course load.

Stratford Continuing Education holds 32nd commencement ceremony

Stratford Continuing Education celebrated their 32nd commencement ceremony on May 12. Twenty three graduates walked across the stage to accept their high school diplomas. Dr. Janet Robinson presented the diplomas to the students. She was accompanied by distinguished Board of Education members who were pleased to also congratulate the students on their success. Family and friends eagerly awaited the students’ arrival into the auditorium.

Three students were selected to address their fellow classmates, family, and friends in commencement speeches. Each shared their journey and the challenges they faced along the way. Alyssa Kurowski was a highly motivated GED student who passed all four sections of the GED test within one semester. Lisa Marie Osorio entered the Credit Diploma Program with only two credits. In two years, she had earned and additional eighteen credits. These credits were earned in class and through the online Virtual High School program. The final speaker, Renee Doran spoke of the many stresses she encountered while balancing family and school responsibilities.

For the first time in the history of the Credit Diploma Program, a mother and daughter received their high school diplomas together. Renee Doran dropped out of Bunnell High School in 1985 to work. A few years later, she began a family. Throughout her life, she always wished to return to school to earn her high school diploma. Renee and Amber, her daughter entered the Credit Diploma Program together in 2013. Prior to Renee and Amber entering our program, Renee’s older daughter, Stacy previously earned her high school diploma through the GED program. Renee and Amber supported one another and learned to balance work and school in order to achieve their shared goal. This journey did not always come easily to these two students. Challenges came along the way but they faced each of these challenges head on and continued to push forward. Renee Doran confidently stood up and addressed the audience with a speech. Amber Doran watched in anticipation and proudly applauded her mother at the end of her speech.
