Eli Whitney School students raise money for Buzz Cuts for Cancer

For the sixth year in a row, students at Eli Whitney School in Stratford buzzed or cut their hair to help kids fighting cancer. The students raised more than $3,000 for The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer, a nonproft that financially supports families whose children are being treated at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven.

Top fundraiser Ayden Burke raised $700 and won the honor of buzzing the head of Mr. Jonathan Garcia, the school band teacher.

And while it’s primarily boys and men who take the buzzcut challenge, girls raise funds for the Tommy Fund, as well. They get a double dose of a good deed, by donating eight inches of their ponytails to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths, which uses donated hair to make wigs for cancer survivors.

Buzzcuts for Cancer at Eli Whitney was supported by Total Image Salon of Stratford, who donated their time and services.

Thank you to the following students for their participation, kindness and amazing fundraising skills:

August Bryk, Garrett Bryk, Ayden Burke, Sam Dina, Jacob Dzienis, Scott Ezarik, Autumn Gomzi, Michael Guasp, Kyle Lewis, Rowan Macintosh, Kiara Moreno, Connor O’Neill, Landon Poitras, Ryan Salthouse, Evan Stalvey, Richie Wermuth, Connor Zbell.

“I am so thrilled by the continued support of this event and that we are teaching our kids how to make a meaningful contribution to helping their peers who have cancer,” said Sherri Dzienis, PTO president at Eli Whitney School. “And we are delighted that Chapel Elementary also held a buzz cuts fundraiser this year.”

Students at Chapel Elementary School in Stratford raised more than $300 during a first-ever Buzz Cuts for Cancer event to benefit the Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer, a non-profit that financially supports families whose children are undergoing cancer treatment at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven.

Because children undergoing chemotherapy may lose their hair, students who want to support children with cancer buzz or cut their hair in solidarity. They received donations from friends and family for their effort.

Student Billy Grey raised the most money, at $100, and for that won a gift card.

Retired teachers honor colleagues who have passed

Former teachers from eight Greater Bridgeport Retired Teachers Association (GBRTA) member towns honored colleagues who passed away during the past year during the annual GBRTA Memorial Service and lunch held on May 12, at Testo’s Restaurant in Bridgeport.

Retired teachers paid tribute to the following deceased teachers:

Ann Simon, Walter Chop, William McGee, Janet Crockett, Frank Slinko, John Semosky, Beatrice Marden, Lottie Palmer, Carmella Esposito, Isobel Broadhurst and Dorothy Straub Genualdi, Mary E. Carley, Joseph Rutlosky, Geraldine Johnson, Mary Louise Foerth, Patricia Belade, Joan DelVecchio, Margaret Clinkscales, Robert Hustek, Susan Bivona, Catherine Zorzy, Mary-Anne Conner, Georgia Kilpatrick and Martha M. Mahoney.

Reverend Timothy Hare, pastor of the Trumbull Congregational Church, delivered an inspirational message. He said, “My mother was a teacher. My wife is a teacher. My father was a school superintendent, and my eight-year-old daughter’s favorite occupation is to play teacher. So I’m glad to be here and to have been invited.”

When the audience chuckled in appreciation, he continued, “Would it be bad form to start out with a little homework assignment?”

Hare’s tribute referenced a book titled Thank You Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco, about Trisha who was befriended, guided and inspired by a teacher.

Spiritual readings were offered by Vice President Barbara Kmetz and GBRTA member Stephanie Fians.

Accompanying  herself on a keyboard, Trumbull Congregational Church organist Ilana Ofgang sang Be Thou My Vision and How Can I Keep from Singing before Chaplain Lucille Baver and President Robert Pitzschler rang the school bell in memory of each deceased member.

Originally established in 1951, the GBRTA teachers association welcomes all retired teachers who receive pensions from the State of Connecticut and who reside or have taught in Greater Bridgeport: Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Milford, Monroe, Shelton, Stratford and Trumbull.

The next general meeting will be held on Oct. 6. More information is available at GBRTA.org.

Stratford Parents’ Place celebrates Family, Friends and Neighbors

Stratford Parents’ Place (SPP) recently celebrated another successful year of its Family, Friends and Neighbors program. More than 15 childcare providers attended this year’s celebration which included a dinner and a raffle for toys and baby equipment. Many of the items were generously donated to Parents’ Place through the Junior Women’s League of Stratford.

The program reaches out to Stratford neighbors who provide child care in their homes for young children, including grandparents and home based daycares. Funding is provided by the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County. The program offers a lending library of learning bags, ongoing provider outreach and support by a certified parent educator; a home visiting program focusing on child development information; and monthly provider/child activity sessions held at Parents’ Place.

This year, several of the providers were introduced to Connecticut’s Early Learning and Development Standards, (CT ELDS). The CT ELDS are statements of what children from birth to age five should know and be able to do across the earliest years of development. By introducing these standards to childcare providers, it helps them to think about activities they can incorporate into their daily routines to promote development and learning. Monica Larzaro, a Stratford home-based childcare provider states that with the help of Stratford Parents’ Place, and learning more about the CT ELDS, she has been able to “create a rich educational environment for her students, which foster their desire to explore, take risks and ultimately learn”.

Many of the providers state that it is the ongoing support and connection to Migda Carrero, parent educator who oversees the program for Parents’ Place, has been the biggest benefit for them. ‘Having access to a resource that I can call anytime to come out and help me brainstorm ideas for things such as how to manage a child’s behavior is so helpful’, states one participant in the program. Another looks forward to this annual celebration as well as the monthly provider/activity sessions to meet with and see other Stratford Providers.

Stratford Parents’ Place, a family resource center, located at Stratford Academy/Johnson House, 719 Birdseye Street is a program of the Stratford Public Schools. All programs and services are for Stratford residents. For more information about this program, call Migda Carrero, Stratford Parents’ Place at 203-381-6992 or email carrerom@stratfordk12.org.

Lawmakers pleased Stratford High renovation money is set

Stratford’s state legislators managed to get funding for the Stratford High School renovation through both houses of the General Assembly last week.

Reps. Joe Gresko, Laura Hoydick and Ben McGorty, along with state Sens. Kevin Kelly and Ed Gomes, worked in concert with both the House and Senate to gain approval of $76 million in grant funds to be allocated for the extension, alteration and roof replacement at the Stratford High School.  The entire project is estimated to cost $125.9 million, and with the grant funds now in place, the state will cover 60.4% of the entire cost of the project.

“The tough economic times our state is enduring makes our commitment to a solid and enduring educational infrastructure, like these improvements at Stratford High School, all the more critical,” Hoydick said. “I appreciate the hard work of our local officials in advancing this project, as well as the hard work of my Stratford colleagues to make sure this project was made a priority during a very busy budget year.”

“Our Stratford team in the legislature worked hard to ensure this investment in our school system was a top priority,” said McGorty. “It is important that we achieve a balanced state-local partnership when it comes to making certain that school students in our communities have all the tools and opportunities we can provide them for success.”

“Securing this reimbursement rate was a top priority during this legislative session,” Gresko said. “It was a pleasure working with our delegation to make it happen. Stratford’s secondary education will become state of the art when this project is complete.”

Kelly was also pleased with securing the funding.

“In tough budget times we have to prioritize how the state spends its money and focus on the core functions of government. Building a strong education system for our children is one of those priorities we must always work to protect. I applaud the state for this much needed local school support,” Kelly said. “These funds will be wisely invested in Stratford High School to add value to our quality education system and local community. This investment will enable our students to go to school in an environment conducive to learning, social development and growth. An investment in education is an investment in our future.”

“Investing in our schools is critical to the future of our community,” said Gomes.  “I’m proud to have worked with the Stratford delegation to get this done.  Any time we can do something for our kids is a good day.”

The bill, which includes numerous school construction projects for the state, SB 503, was signed on June 3 by Gov. Dannel  Malloy.

Rules set for Nature’s Classroom trips

$

After frustrations around the changes to a class trip to Nature’s Classroom, the Board of Education has opted to set some ground rules.

The school board voted at a special meeting on Monday to set up rules that all of the town’s elementary schools can abide by. Board of Ed Chairman Jim Feehan said the rules include that teachers who know the students have to attend the trip, though there will be opportunities for parents to serve as chaperones. Also, everyone must have the opportunity to go on the trip, even those with financial hardships and physical disabilities.

Feehan said the schools themselves will decide the length of any Nature’s Classroom trip and all trips must be submitted to the Board of Ed’s curriculum committee for approval.

The changes came in response to the situation at Chapel Street Elementary School. Parents there were angered in March after finding out that the sixth graders’ overnight trip to a Litchfield County campground was modified from an overnight trip to an extended day trip with no overnight stay. Chapel Street teachers opted out of being chaperones in October following allegations that a former teacher’s aide and tutor at the school had an inappropriate relationship with a student. The teachers had said they felt uncomfortable doing an overnight trip. Principal Carla Armistead later volunteered to be a chaperone and the trip was rescheduled to allow for an overnight trip.

The school board also voted to accept the $106.7 million budget for the 2016-17 school year. The Board of Ed outlay is part of the $215.3 million townwide spending plan approved by the Town Council on May 9.

Feehan said the Board of Ed made some adjustments that will allow the district to bring in nine new match coaches for the elementary schools. There were some cuts, including the removal of the remainder of the foreign language program from the elementary schools.
