Sikorsky Credit Union awards Stratford student $1,000 scholarship

Sikorsky Credit Union recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to five high school seniors who are headed to college in the fall of 2016. Through the Thomas J. Williams scholarship program, Sikorsky Credit Union annually awards five scholarships to students who use the money toward college expenses such as tuition, books or materials.

Students wrote essays describing money lessons learned in high school, or about achieving a financial goal. A record 75 students submitted essays, which were reviewed by a committee.

Ashley O’Neill of Stratford was one of this year’s winners. Other winners are Christian Gamauf and Megan Gray of Oxford, Joseph Szewczyk of Ansonia and Christine Walsh of Milford.

“There is always great enthusiasm for these scholarships,” said Diane Farrell, senior vice president of marketing. “We were able to meet all of this year’s winners in person, and they all were excited to learn of their outstanding achievement. I can tell from their essays that they all have a very bright future ahead of them.”

Sikorsky Credit Union annually awards scholarships, and named the program after Thomas J. Williams, longtime CEO of the Credit Union, who passed away in 2015.

Scavenger hunt participants may receive free entry to Beardsley Zoo

$

0

The Great Meadows Marsh Scavenger Hunt open to all Stratford students up through high school will be held at Long Beach and Great Meadows Marsh through Aug. 12.

Each student who completes the hunt successfully, and follows the submission instructions, below, may pick up a free admission ticket for Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo from the Town of Stratford Conservation Department.

Participants head down to the marsh, and complete the following activities:

1) As you enter the Long Beach Complex, take a photo showing yourself beneath a street sign that reads Marcia Stewart Way. Marcia Stewart is a wonderful woman who introduced generations of Stratford Youth to the marsh and fought tirelessly for the conservation of this amazing resource.

2) Provide a photo of the marsh which shows Salt Marsh Cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora). The thick mats of tall grass slow water that moves in and out with the tides. As the water slows, sediments settle out of the water column. This sedimentation allows the marsh to accrete (i.e. grow). The grasses also provide an important habitat for various crabs, snails, and juvenile fish during high tide.

3) Provide a photo of yourself with, or next to, ribbed mussels. Mussels are a type of bivalve (two-shelled) mollusc (a group of invertebrates which also includes snails, squid, and octopus). Ribbed mussels are abundant in the low marsh where they feed when submerged. Particles in suspension in the water are sorted on the gills of the mussel. The molluscs selectively retain particles of food (such as phytoplankton) and eject non-food items (such as sediments) on to the marsh mud. Ribbed mussels are often found clumped together, attached by byssal threads which are produced by the foot.

4) Provide a photo of yourself holding a mud snail. The mud snail is a type of mollsuc with a single shell that is generally shaped like a cone. The head of the snail is well developed with eyes and tentacles. The mouth contains a ribbon- or belt-like structure known as the radula. The radula is covered in sharp teeth that allow the carnivorous snail to feed on dead and decaying organisms. A carnivore is an animal that feeds upon other animals.

5) Provide a photo of fiddler crabs. This one may be a little more difficult. Fiddler crabs can move quickly and burrow in holes in the low marsh. During high tide, these crustaceans stay in their burrows. At low tide, they emerge to feed on algae, decomposing marsh grass, animals remains, and worms in the marsh mud. Fiddler crabs are easily distinguished as the male has a very large first claw which is used to attract females during breeding season.

6) Provide a photo of a piece of trash in the marsh, and another photo of yourself throwing it away or recycling the item. Litter is a big problem for the marsh. Not only can trash affect the beauty of the habitat, but it can also be swept to sea by winds and tides. Items like plastic bags and soda can rings remain in the oceans for hundreds or thousands of years. Many animals like whales and sea turtles may die if they swallow these items after mistaking them for food.

7) In addition to submitting the required photographs, write three things which you learned about the marsh by participating in the scavenger hunt. Also, write one or more questions that you have about the marsh or some of the organisms that you encountered during your adventure.

Email your completed scavenger hunt (items 1-7) to the Conservation Administrator at cbatoh@townofstratford.com. Include your name, address, and the school and grade you will be entering in the fall. Your free admission ticket to the zoo will be mailed to you. All completed scavenger hunts must be received by Aug. 12.

Tips

Go to the marsh with a parent or friend. The marsh is a natural ecosystem and you can easily get stuck in marsh mud or cut your feet on mussel shells. It is always a good idea to be with someone in case of an emergency.

Wear sunscreen, bug repellent, and either watershoes or boots.

Check the tides before you head out to the marsh. Most of the organisms are much easier to spot at low tide.

Check yourself for ticks immediately as you exit the marsh. Ticks reside in the vegetation on the edges of the marsh and can climb on to you if you brush up against them.

In the Spotlight, a junior and senior high school musical theater program, presents its production of Urinetown, music and lyrics by Mark Hollman and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, on Friday, July 22, at 8 p.m., Saturday, July 23, at 3 and 8 p.m. and Sunday, July 24, at 4:30 p.m., at the Klein Memorial Auditorium, 910 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport. Urinetown is directed by Kevin Miller, music directed by Will Duchon, and choreographed by Meghan Daly.

Urinetown is a satirical comedy musical, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis. It satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics. The show also parodies musicals such as The Threepenny Opera, The Cradle Will Rock and Les Misérables, and the Broadway musical itself as a form.

Now in its 25th year, In the Spotlight is supported and funded by The Mighty Quinn Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the enhancement of artistic and educational opportunities for young men and women. The Mighty Quinn Foundation honors Quinn Rooney’s passion for learning and love of theater by providing scholarships, training, artistic programming and creative opportunities within its community. Quinn Rooney was a member of In the Spotlight, so when given the opportunity to support this Stratford theater program, the Mighty Quinn Foundation seized it.

Tickets may be purchased online for $12 at theklein.org, or at the door for $15.

Board of Education sends out residency letters

The Stratford Board of Education has started the process of making sure all students attending town schools are legal town residents.

A letter from School Superintendent Janet Robinson was sent out to all parents and guardians of current Stratford students. The letter notes that the district will be conducting “an overall residency review for the 2016-17 school year that will involve and affect our entire school community.”

The letters come after the Board of Ed in June authorized Robinson to send out the residency check letters.

The letter reads that “In the near future, we will be conducting residency checks of everyone in our school community in order to update our student files.”

The residency checks will be done one grade level at a time in a rolling process, Robinson’s letter continues.

“The process will be explained in further detail and you will be asked to upload updated proof of residency paperwork for your children when your child’s grade level comes up,” the letter reads. That proof will include utility bills, tax payments and documents indicating someone’s guardianship of a student.

A second letter is expected to be issued next month via regular mail and email.

The proof of residency push was spearheaded by Board of Ed Chairman James Feehan, who said in March that it’s unfair that some non-resident students are attending Stratford schools and not paying for it. Parents or guardians of students found in violation of the residency requirements may be subject to prosecution or have to pay the district tuition for usage of the schools, Feehan said recently.

The first day of the 2016-17 school year is Sept. 1.
